Born and raised in Manila, Philippines, MARIE JAMORA is a genre-agnostic director who finds joy in storytelling, performance, and craft. In her first two years of the DGA, she directed episodes for Ava DuVernay’s award-winning QUEEN SUGAR (OWN), Seasons 1 and 2 of THE CLEANING LADY (FOX), GREASE: RISE OF THE PINK LADIES (Paramount+), THE RESIDENT (FOX), GOOD SAM (CBS), FANTASY ISLAND (FOX) ALL RISE (OWN) and two seasons of FIRE COUNTRY (CBS). Marie was the Executive Producer and Director for Warner Bros/Stage13’s unscripted food series FAMILY STYLE (HBO Max). In 2023, Marie was the Producer-Director for Ava DuVernay’s untitled limited series on Starz, starring Joshua Jackson and Lauren Ridloff. Most recently, she directed Academy Award and Emmy winner Kathy Bates in the first season of MATLOCK for CBS.
Marie began her career directing over 50 music videos in the golden age of the Philippine rock scene. She produced, wrote, and directed her first feature ANG NAWAWALA (WHAT ISN'T THERE) which premiered at the Slamdance Film Festival. Her short film FLIP THE RECORD screened at over 30 festivals worldwide, winning the Grand Jury Award for Best Narrative Short at Urbanworld and was shortlisted for the 90th Academy Awards®. Marie became the first Filipino director to be accepted into the American Film Institute's Directing Workshop for Women, where she wrote and directed HARANA, which won the Grand Jury Prize for U.S. Narrative Short at the Sarasota Film Festival. Prior to that, the musician-director was named one of “Five Visionary Asian-American Female Filmmakers” in Kore Magazine’s ‘New Hollywood’ issue.
She graduated from Columbia University with an MFA in Film and returned to Manila to direct commercials and television. After immigrating to Los Angeles with a desire to amplify Filipino stories, Marie founded the 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, CINEMA SALA, which has been amplifying filmmakers and their work from the Philippine diaspora since 2016. Cinema Sala has been supported by The Sundance Institute, Cinereach, and the California Arts Council.
Marie has worked with many film festivals, beginning as an Associate Shorts programmer for the 2013 Slamdance Film Festival, 2018 Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival Shorts Jury, and 2021 Slamdance Shorts Jury. She was a Slamdance Narrative Features programmer in 2015 and 2016, The Indies 2024 Features Jury, Head of Jury in the 2024 Manila International Film Festival, and Feature Film Jury for the 2025 Bentonville Film Festival.
After two decades of filmmaking and teaching, Marie has taught at the American Film Institute, Ateneo de Manila University, Sundance Collab, and is the 2025 Guest Artistic Director of AFI’s Directing Workshop for Women program. Marie was one of the leaders of the DGA Women’s Steering Committee Squad mentorship program, is a Board Member for the Slamdance Foundation, a member of the Television Academy, and proudly one of the few Filipinos in the Directors Guild of America.
